Fellowships, reports and training for journalists

Some upcoming opportunities for journalists: 

The Nieman Foundation has a number of fellowships available, including U.S. Fellowships (deadline: Jan. 31), International Fellowships (deadline: Dec. 1), and the Nieman Berkman Fellowship in Journalism Innovation (deadline: Jan. 31).

Applications for the John S. Knight Fellowships at Stanford University are open to journalists and journalism entrepreneurs. The application deadline for international applicants is Dec. 1; for U.S. applicants, Jan. 15, 2014.

The Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University is offering fellowships to investigative journalists in connection with its project on institutional corruption. Deadline to apply is Jan. 1, 2014.

ONA is co-hosting the next Google for Media training Dec. 4 at The James Hotel in Chicago. This free, full-day event will feature conversation and training to inspire and empower journalists seeking to improve their storytelling abilities. All are welcome to attend. Registration will open soon — if you’d like to be added to the list, let us know by emailing mediasummit@google.com.

The Knight Foundation recently released Finding a Foothold: How Nonprofit News Ventures Seek Sustainability, which explores how nonprofit news organizations raise and spend money. The report analyzes 18 news organizations and provides downloadable data for analysis.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is hosting a specialized two week training for journalists and public relations professionals on Cyber and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Threats, Feb. 3-14, 2014, in Turin, Italy. The training consists of two modules and cost is € 1700 for both or € 900 for one. Application deadline is Dec. 15.

AP Google Journalism and Technology Scholarship
Aimed at students working at the intersection of journalism and technology, this scholarship will provide $20,000 to six students for the 2013-14 academic year.
Deadline: February 8, 2013 

Google Journalism Fellowship
Targeting students with an interest in journalism, this fellowship includes a week at the Knight Foundation and a week at Google, split between Google News and YouTube.
Deadline: January 31, 2013

Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship
For journalists who have covered international news, this is a nine month fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations headquarters in New York.
Deadline: March 1, 2013

Persephone Miel Fellowship
Open to journalists and media professionals outside the U.S. who seek to report from their home country.
Deadline: February 15, 2013

Poynter Naughton Fellow
This entry-level position gives recent college graduates an opportunity to work with Poynter for a year.

World Press Institute Fellowships
For international journalists with at least five years experience, this fellowship provides an immersion experience in the U.S.

Nieman-Berkman Fellowship in Innovative Journalism
For journalists and those who work for news organizations who are interested in conducting research or working on a project related to journalism innovation.

Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship
Open to journalists with at least five years of experience, this fellowship includes extensive travel and a $70,000 stipend for U.S. fellows (stipends for international fellows vary).
Deadline: February 1, 2013

The Fellowship in Global Journalism
Targeting early-career journalists who cover international issues, this unique program has a strong mentorship component.
Deadline: February 11, 2013

Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship at Harvard
For domestic or international journalists, scholars and/or policymakers who are interested in the influence of the press on public policy and politics.
Deadline: February 15, 2013

Knight Science Journalism Fellowships at MIT
For mid-career journalists, this nine-month fellowship includes a $65,000 stipend.

Get recognized. Get funded. Apply for a fellowship. Submit your work to be recognized. Here’s a roundup of current opportunities for journalists.

Loeb Awards UCLA Anderson School of Management and the G. and R. Loeb Foundation invite business, financial and economic journalists from print, online and broadcast media to submit entries for the 2012 Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism in 13 competition categories. The awards recognize writers, editors and producers who make significant contributions to the understanding of business, finance and the economy for both the private investor and the general public. Submissions will be accepted online until Jan. 31 here.

Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellowships The Reynolds Journalism Institute invites applications for its 2012-2013 class of Donald W. Reynolds Fellows. The eight-month program provides an opportunity to pursue innovative ideas, test them with real-world experiments, use applied research to assess their effectiveness and deliver solutions that citizens and journalists can put to use in their own communities. Proposals will be judged by their quality and potential for real-world impact. Applications will be acepted until January 31. More information here.

2012-2013 Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship The Council on Foreign Relations is accepting application for the Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship. This fellowship is open to foreign correspondents or editors, for a nine month fellowship at CFR headquarters in New York. The program gives the fellow an opportunity to broaden his or her perspective of international affairs and to pursue proposed research using CFR resources.  The deadline for applications is February 1. American Legion Fourth Estate Awards The American Legion presents the Fourth Estate Awards annually, recognizing outstanding achievements made in print, broadcast and new media. The awards recognize journalists who have made a positive impact in their community. A $2,000 stipend accompanies each award. The entry deadline is Feb. 3, 2012. Apply online here

Azbee Awards The 2012 Azbee Awards, which honor excellence in B2B publishing, have two new categories this year: Webcast Series and Best Use of Apps. The deadline has been extended to Feb. 3. The competition is open to any English-language, U.S.-based publication (a print magazine or newsletter, or website, e-mail newsletter, blog or digital magazine), whose content is business-to-business oriented. Eligible digital entries must have been published, posted or emailed from Jan. 1, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2011. Enter here.

Sigma Delta Chi Awards Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents theSigma Delta Chi Awards recognizing excellence in journalism. The contest recognizes the best in professional journalism in categories covering print, broadcast and online reporting. The entry deadline is Feb. 9, 2012. Entrants may apply online here.

Mirror Awards Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is accepting online nominations for the sixth annual Mirror Awards competition for excellence in media industry reporting. Deadline is Feb. 10. Anyone can nominate, and there is no fee to enter. Award categories include: Best Single Article, Digital Media; Best Profile, Digital Media ($1,000 prize) and Best Commentary, Digital Media, each with a $1,000 prize. Enter here.

Global Editors Network opens entries for Data Journalism Awards
The Global Editors Network (GEN) announced the launch of the first annual Data Journalism Awards (DJA), the international competition recognizing outstanding work in the growing field of data journalism. The GEN initiative is supported by Google, organized in collaboration with the European Journalism Centre, and ONA is a proud media partner. An international jury of data journalism and media experts, including ONA Board member Josh Hatch, will select the six winning submissions, led by Jury President Paul Steiger, founder of ProPublica. A total of €45,000 (around $57,000) will be awarded to the six winning projects. Entries are welcome in the categories of Data-Driven Investigative Journalism; Data Visualization and Storytelling and Data-Driven Applications. Both national/international and local/regional projects are welcome and submissions must have been published or aired between April 11, 2011, and April 10, 2012. Submit your entry here. Deadline is April 10.
