I’m curious about the ethics of Periscope, Meerkat and other livestreaming tools. Is it ever acceptable for a reporter to not disclose that he or she is livestreaming (say, at a public event with other media?)

Are news organizations to be held responsible for offensive or libelous comments made by viewers on a livestream that they host? What about the livestreams that a reporter broadcasts during her or his free time that may run afoul of company social media policies?

My news organization is working on best practices and I’d love to start a conversation about this.

With two years of her four-year term as the Times’s Public Editor (Graylady-ese for ombudsman) under her belt, she has not only adapted to the speed of the web, but managed to keep pace with its topicality and bottomless appetite for controversy. Sometimes that’s required stirring up controversy herself. But this is what makes her so different from her predecessors: she has ushered the position into a new media age by reimagining the very purpose of the job.

We spend a lot of time thinking about this challenge in our day-to-day work in social journalism. And that’s what led us to bring together people with common experiences across the industry into an ONA working group focusing on the ethics and standards of social and digital newsgathering.

Eric Carvin and Fergus Bell, the founders of the ONA social newsgathering working group, are social media editors at The Associated Press, and Eric also chairs ONA’s News Ethics Committee.

News and information are being influenced in a way that has never happened before. Internal policing, journalists calling each other out on Twitter – I think there’s the potential for our media to get better and better. We’re already starting to see it.

Jeanne Brooks, ONA’s Digital Director, discusses journalism ethics, the rise of citizen participation in journalism and media accountability with the International Business Times.
