2015 James Foley Award to honor unsung heroes: conflict reporters

All too often, it takes a searing, unthinkable image to make the public aware of the dangers a unique breed of journalists face daily. On Aug. 19, one hit particularly close to home: the brutal murder of freelance photographer Jim Foley in Syria at the hands of ISIS, after being held captive for nearly two years.

Jim’s work, like that of his colleagues’, appeared across the globe, as photos, videos or dispatches, describing the horrors of combat, the broken lives of civilians, the legacy of political decisions made far away. It’s crucial work, and, now more than ever, life-threatening. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 40 journalists have died doing their jobs in 2014 so far, covering war, corruption, crime, culture and politics in far-flung countries around the world.

The 2015 James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting, announced at the Online Journalism Awards Banquet on Sept. 27 during the Online News Association Conference in Chicago, is a step toward recognizing that work, and honoring the men and women who see it as their mission. It will be awarded next year to a digital journalist doing excellent reporting in the most challenging conditions and we’ll be formulating the criteria and selection process for the award over the next months.

As it considers rules governing the relationships between content creators and service providers, the FCC asks, ‘What is the right public policy to ensure that the Internet remains open?’
As the leading organization representing thousands of digital journalists worldwide, we’d like to respond to that question: The right public policy is one that ensures the Internet serves as an unrestricted platform for a rich, diverse and inclusive news media ecosystem.

The American Society of News Editors (ASNE) recently released its annual study of newsroom diversity. The results only confirmed what many who have lived through the industry’s deep recession have already experienced: a steady decline in minority journalists and stagnation in prior progress. Despite claims by news organizations that they value and promote diversity, the numbers in this year’s study show 90 percent of newsroom supervisors from participating news organizations were white.

Riva Gold discusses media diversity with a number of ONA board members and friends, including ONA Board President Jim Brady, Benet Wilson, Juana Summers, and Robert Hernandez.

Looking at diversity in online news, Gold points out how ONA has worked to diversify its programming and conference.

The Best of Newsgaming at the Editors’ Lab - NYTimes.com

Saturday, the New York Times opened its newsroom for a hackday sponsored by the Global Editors Network. Congratulations to the team from the Chicago Tribune, who won the event and will go on to the GEN News Summit in Paris to compete in the GEN News Hackathon. You can see all the submitted projects on the New York Times.

ONA was proud to be a part of the hackday—our Executive Director Jane McDonnell was one of the judges and Digital Director Jeanne Brooks attended—and is thrilled to be working with the Global Editors Network on the GEN News Summit. We’ve pulled together six workshops that will show the world’s leading editors how to design better newsrooms, rethink social strategy, create news products for the ever-changing consumer needs, and more in Paris this June.

You can still register for the GEN News Summit, and ONA members get a nice discount.
