When I was a little girl my parents had legally migrated to the U.S. and did not speak a word of English. Every day I would watch Sesame Street and because of that show I learned to read, count to 100 and understand that just because I was a different color didn’t mean I didn’t belong. In fact, the show taught me to appreciate everything that is different about a person because friends are everywhere. It was also the only American station that had Latinos in the forefront — not based on stereotypes but good, hardworking, loving people just like my own family.

ONA Issues: Free Press is compiling stories that demonstrate the importance of public media. They plan to use the stories to influence Congress, who currently have five bills pending that would cut funding for PBS and NPR.
