From Reporters’s Lab:
If there’s one journalism tool we’ve harped on most here at the Reporters’ Lab, it’s the Web scraper.
We’ve tested a few of the most popular options, lamented the demise of Google’s Needlebase and issued an open challenge to build a versatile point-and-click solution for collecting data from annoying public databases without learning to code.
But there’s a good reason for all the attention. Web scrapers can save a reporter hours of tedious copying and pasting or weeks waiting for responses to public records requests. They’re a perfect example of the technology we want to get into the hands of more journalists interested in public affairs reporting.
