I can think of no better strategy than to learn programming. This is a skill that not only makes more efficient every other journalism skill (writing, researching, publishing) but can, like Bamford’s relentless FOIAs, reveal stories that non-programming journalists will never be able to do, and in an unfortunate number of cases, even conceive of.
